On tuesday we had a pretty good day with around 14 tunas and a few dolphin. One tuna was 90 pounds and that was a yellowfin-not a bigeye. However, on Wednesday our luck turned south and we only had 3 tuna for the day. That's tough fishing but we did all we could.
On Monday we had about 8 dolphin in the box around 2:00. A little after 3:00 we had our limit of tuna. The bite turned on in a hurry! You never know what's going to happen out there.
On Wednesday we caught 5 bigeye tuna with the largest one weighing 169 pounds! That was a really nice fish. Today, it was a limit of dolphin. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.
On Saturday there were a million boats going south to fish around the point. The Hooker, and about 5 other boats decided to go north and we were rewarded. The tunas were there and they were hungry! We caught our limit for the day and headed back in. We didn't fare quite as well on Sunday-some dolphin and a few tuna-but we did get a shot a nice blue marlin. That's about the 4th one we've seen this past week and we haven't gotten one of them. That's getting a little frustrating-maybe I'm not holding my mouth right.
We had a couple of days that were so-so, a few tuna and maybe a dozen dolphin- but yesterday was really good dolphin fishing. Again, lots of nice size gaffers-up to 35 pounds.
On Thursday I really messed up. I zigged when I should have zagged and got punished for it. We ended up with a few dolphin but missed out on the good tuna bite south of us. I really hated that but sometimes that's what happens. Our luck was a little better on Friday with about 5 or 6 tuna and around a dozen dolphin. We'll see what happens today.
It's been really good fishing the last couple of days aboard "The Hooker". On Tuesday we caught a lot of gaffer dolphin and then heard the tuna bite was pretty good. We picked up and ran a little ways and ended up with two big eyes and a few yellowfin to round out the catch. On Wednesday we had a group from the Manteo Rotary Club and they had a great time catching a box full of gaffer dolphin. The tuna bite was extremely slow that day so we very happy to have what we did.
We had a great catch of really nice gaffer dolphin yesterday. Most were 15 to 25 pounds but several were pushing 35. We also had sailfish so it was a great day of fishing. The fog was terrible in the morning but it finally cleard up once we got in the warm water.
